JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Adult Services, this position provides reference services, technology help, and readers' advisory to the public at the Central Library in-person at the public service desk, as well as via phone and email. This is a 12 hour per week part time position with no benefits. Some nights and weekends required.

SALARY

$21 per hour; 12 hours per week

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association
  • One year of experience preferred
  • Ability to travel to required locations in a timely manner

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides exemplary customer service.
    Provides reference services and readers' advisory to the public in-person at the public service desk, as well as via phone and email.
  • Instructs library users in the use of the online catalog, basic reference tools, and other library equipment and services.
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and provides instruction on public computers and all library-owned technology.
  • Assists with circulation functions including checking out materials, placing holds, and issuing library cards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Commitment to outstanding public service.
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and tools of library science in general and public library reference service in particular.
  • Knowledge of basic computer troubleshooting including hardware and printers.
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of common office applications.
  • Knowledge of eReaders and eBooks platforms.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team to achieve library goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of current technological applications for information access. Ability to utilize web-based and subscription databases.
  • Ability to push carts and bins loaded with library materials.
  • Ability to reach and retrieve library materials at high and low shelf heights.
  • Experience with integrated library systems, preferably Koha ILS and Aspen Discovery.

The Cranston Public Library is seeking an extraordinary candidate for the position of Head Custodian at the Central Library. The Cranston Public Library is innovating library services to fulfill the needs of our changing and diverse community.  Come join our team!

This position is under the direction of the Assistant Library Director and performs routine building maintenance and cleaning. This is a 35 hour per week union position with some nights and weekends required. This position is based at the Central library.

The Cranston Public Library (CPL) system consists of a Central library with five branch locations. CPL serves a population of 82,000 residents and is one of the busiest public libraries in Rhode Island. The Cranston Public Library was awarded the 2020 Jerry Kline Community Impact Prize. In 2016 CPL received the LibraryAware Community Award and in 2015 was named Library of the Year by the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. CPL is a member of the Ocean State Libraries (OSL) consortium.

SALARY

Starting Salary of $38,311; $39,339.22 after six-month probationary period

Full benefits package including vacation, sick time, dental insurance, health insurance, life insurance and retirement plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma
  • Experience in commercial building maintenance and cleaning
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel to required locations in a timely manner

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • The position requires lifting, carrying and moving objects up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to climb a ladder
  • Basic computer skills including knowledge of Windows operating system, email and basic Internet skills
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment and procedures
  • Ability to function as a member of a team to achieve library goals and objectives

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Supervises, schedules, and trains part-time custodial staff at all locations
  • Responsible for ordering and inventory of all maintenance and cleaning supplies
  • Coordinates with City of Cranston building maintenance and outside vendors
  • Monitors online HVAC control system; adjusts HVAC controls as necessary
  • Complete cleaning and sanitation of all restroom facilities
  • Does minor plumbing, such as plunging, which does not require licensure
  • Replenishes all restroom, staff room, kitchen, and workroom cleaning supplies
  • Empties all trash and recycling containers and disposes of waste appropriately
  • Vacuums carpeted areas daily; mops non-carpeted floors 
  • Replaces light bulbs
  • Cleans and sanitizes water fountains
  • Cleans glass doors, panels, and windows throughout the library
  • Dusts & cleans bookshelves, windowsills, desks, furniture, and equipment
  • Sets up tables and chairs for programs in the meeting rooms. Checks daily meeting room schedules.
  • Cleans and prepares meeting rooms and kitchen. Opens the building for groups using meeting rooms as required
  • Picks up paper and trash on library grounds
  • Trims weeds/grass and performs other light landscaping duties
  • Coordinates recycling program
  • Keeps library walkways free of ice and snow during winter
  • Fills maintenance supply request for branch libraries
  • Maintains and updates library emergency supply kits at all locations
  • Picks up supplies from local vendors as needed
  • Performs other duties as required

JOB SUMMARY

Part-time for a busy public library system. Routine building maintenance & cleaning duties. Ability to climb, lift, & stretch. Morning hours, 16 hours per week. Some schedule flexibility is essential. Transportation required. 

SALARY

$14 per hour; 16 hours per week

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Previous experience in cleaning, janitorial work, or custodial services

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • The position requires lifting, carrying and moving objects up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to climb a ladder
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment and procedures

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Previous experience in cleaning, janitorial work, or custodial services
  • Knowledge of floor care and commercial cleaning techniques
  • Familiarity with industrial cleaning and facilities maintenance
  • Ability to perform porter duties and basic maintenance tasks
