Cranston, RI – The Cranston Public Library is pleased to announce that Alyssa Taft has been named The University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS) Recent Alumna of the Year for 2024. Taft graduated from URI in 2017 with both a Master's in Library and Information Science (MLIS) and MA in English. Taft’s MLIS degree was completed with School Library Media certification, and she first worked as the library media specialist at Portsmouth Middle School before joining the Cranston Public Library teen services team in 2019.
Taft is a passionate librarian dedicated to engaging teens. At the Cranston Public Library, she runs a diverse range of programs, including book groups, teen craft and educational programs, and the service-oriented "Service Saturday” and Teen Volunteer program where local teens can complete their community service requirements. She also fosters connections beyond the library walls by partnering with community groups like OneCranston Health Equity Zone, the Cranston Senior Center, and Cranston Public Schools.
Her dedication extends to the wider library community; she currently holds the secretary position for the RI Teen Book Award Committee, is Co-Chair of the RILA Conference Committee and has contributed to School Library Journal, Computers in Libraries, and Publisher’s Weekly.
Taft will be presented with the award at the GSLIS annual gathering on May 3, 2024.
