Information Technology Manager

The Cranston Public Library is seeking an extraordinary candidate for the position of Information Technology (IT) Manager. The Cranston Public Library (CPL) system consists of a central library with five branch locations. CPL serves a population of 83,000 residents and is one of the busiest public libraries in Rhode Island. CPL is a member of the Ocean State Libraries (OSL) consortium.

Position Description:

The Information Technology (IT) Manager is a non-union managerial position responsible for the planning, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing operations of technologies across the Cranston Public Library system while also providing basic technology support for library operations. The IT Manager is a confidential employee, a member of the Administration Team, and reports directly to the Assistant Library Director.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Two years of experience as an IT manager or IT professional. Experience working in a library setting is a plus.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to function as a member of a team to achieve library goals and objectives.
  • Well-organized with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage projects.
  • Ability to evaluate current services and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Broad knowledge of common software packages available for personal computers, and the ability to use such programs.
  • Hands-on experience with computer networks and network administration.
  • Working knowledge of website design including HTML/CSS.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide effective customer service.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Installs and sets up all desktop computers, laptops, printers, scanners, hotspots, peripherals at all library locations.
  • Maintains and upgrades all computers, printers, telephones, peripherals, and servers; creates a planned maintenance and replacement schedule to ensure continuity of service.
  • Installs, upgrades, and maintains network security software, public computer management system, and print management systems.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots all library audiovisual equipment, including projectors, microphones, sound systems, and related presentation software and peripherals.
  • Assists staff at all levels in troubleshooting and technology training, both in person and remotely.
  • Maintains the library’s email system including assigning email addresses, compliance with Rhode Island retention schedules, and security updates.
  • Sets up security systems and assists designated staff in accessing security footage to review, respecting privacy and confidentiality in alignment with the library’s privacy policy and video surveillance policy.
  • Maintains the library’s staff intranet.
  • Coordinates network and technology operations with Ocean State Libraries (OSL) technology staff and the City of Cranston IT Department. Manages communications with outside technology vendors.
  • Maintains library information and staff accounts on OSL consortium intranet and Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Maintains knowledge of current and future technology trends and service needs in public libraries to keep CPL services and equipment up to date.
  • Ensures security of data, network access and backup systems, continuously updating and enhancing security and privacy features in alignment with industry standards.
  • Responsible for technical support of the CPL website.
  • Keeps an organized and up-to-date inventory of all technology equipment; removes and recycles out of date equipment in a timely manner.
  • Provides inventories, general usage statistics, and other reports as necessary.
  • Responsible for domain registration and renewal for all CPL web properties.
  • Provides technology support to the public when possible.
  • Represents the Library at the OSL Libraries Information Technology (LIT) Working Group.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of information.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects, occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to bend, lift, stretch, climb ladders, and crawl to install and maintain equipment.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout buildings.

Other Information:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including occasional nights and Saturdays.
  • Must be willing to travel among six library locations throughout Cranston.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a safe driving record. A Driving Record check is required.
  • Background and Criminal Investigation (BCI) is required.

Salary:  Salary starting at $65,000.

Part Time Library Aide - William Hall Library

Under the supervision of the branch librarian, this part time position is responsible for the circulation of materials loaned to the public, including check out and check in of library materials; issuance of library cards; fines and fees collection; and providing assistance to the public. This is a 10-15 hour per week position with some nights and weekends required.

SALARY

$15 per hour

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or equivalent. Previous library experience preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Commitment to outstanding public service.
  • Ability to alphabetize and recognize numerical order
  • Working knowledge of basic computer skills; proficiency in using a keyboard and mouse.
  • Ability to handle cash transactions.
  • Ability to push carts and lift bins loaded with library materials.
  • Ability to reach and retrieve library materials at high and low shelf heights.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team to achieve library goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides exemplary customer service.
  • Assists in maintaining the consistent workflow of all circulation activities, including check out and check in of materials, fines and fees collection, and shelving.
  • Registers patrons for library cards
  • Answers questions about library services, events, and spaces, and directs the public to the appropriate department.
  • Assists patrons with use of computers and printing of documents.
  • Assists patrons with locating materials and placing materials on hold.
  • Follows policies without bias or judgement to ensure patron privacy and free, equal access to materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
